Hot water is a fairly important part of your day. No one wants to be soaped up and in the middle of a nice warm shower, when suddenly you are standing in cold water. So what happened?

Why did you run out of hot water?

There are several reasons your hot water could not be working properly. Once you know what the problem is you can move quickly towards a solution.

  • Check to see if the thermostat is working properly. You may need to adjust the setting. You want to make sure you never set the thermostat hotter than 49C to prevent elderly and children from getting scalded.
  • Next you should check out the circuit breaker. If it has tripped then you will need to check for loose wires or a busted element. If you have a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is on.
  • If your water heater is making a lot of noise then the problem could be that the wrong elements are in it and need to be replaced.
  • If you notice a leak then there can be a problem with the pressure relief valve or the pipes bursting.

These are some of the most common issues that can happen with your hot water heater due to extremely cold weather or from natural wear and tear.

Can you Fix It

Sometimes you move into a home that already needs some upgrades. If the water heater is very old you might want to consider a replacement for a couple of reasons. The hot water issue you are experiencing might be because you have too many people for the size of water heater that is currently in your home. If it’s older you might be dealing with pipe corrosion. If your problem with your hot water is a leaky pressure valve or a blown circuit then this is something you can certainly take care of yourself. It isn’t difficult to replace a broken pressure valve. If you have a major leak in your pipes then you will need a professional opinion and their help to fix the issue.

Doing a bit of trouble shooting on your own and learning the reason you don’t have operating hot water will allow you to determine if you want to call in a professional water heater plumber. You can also determine what you need to do to get it operating normally. This will allow you to get back to life as normal.
