Laundry Drainage Installation

Installation of new drains is a relatively easy process and can be done by most DIY enthusiasts. The laundry drains are connected to the washer unit and installed on the plumbing system. Because of this, it is necessary to be aware of the regulations that govern the installation of the new drains. These rules ensure that the house remains safe from hazards such as fires. Though the drains are connected to the whole laundry unit, the drier does not require the services. However, it is important that the drier is connected to a vent so that it can be effective in its purpose.

New Laundry Drain Installation: What’s Involved?

Drain installation is not an ideal task for a beginner or anyone who lacks basic mechanical skills. Before you begin the work, ensure that you have carpentry tools, fittings and other drain accessories that you may require such as glue. The process can be simply outlined as follows:

  • Locating a Drainpipe

When the new laundry drain is being installed, it is necessary to find a drainpipe to connect with. It could be the shower, toilet or even the sink drain. In some cases, you may not get direct access and you may be forced to remove some of the wall covering.

  • Attaching the Fitting

The drainpipe should then be marked at the point that the wye fitting will be attached. Depending on the orientation of the pipes, a sanitary tee could also be used. The marked spot is then cut out and all the burrs removed. The fittings and the drainpipe are then glued together to form a tap-in. This should offer an outlet of two inches that should be aligned with the washer.

  • Installing the Adapter

An adapter, usually 45 degrees is added to the new laundry drainpipe. A strapping attached to the floor joist will also be required to support the washer hose. Each brand will have specific requirements with regard to this feature. The adapter is then installed into the strapping and glued to the wye fitting. The hose is then attached to the vertical standpipe.

  • Connecting and Checking

Once you connect the washer hose to the system and secure it to the drain lines, it is necessary to check for leaks coming from the pipes. Isolation valves can be opened to ensure that the check up is thorough. If there are leaks, additional work will have to be done but if the installation was done correctly, there should be no problems experienced. Usually, the installation of the drier vent is done after this process is complete.

Maintenance and Care

Proper care of the new laundry drain pipes is necessary. Ensure that you employ the correct usage of your washer unit to ensure that the pipes have extended lifespan. If there are any problems that may result in clogs or leaks, seek assistance before the issue escalates. Where possible, soften the water that you use for your laundry. This will extend the lifespan of your pipes and reduce deposition of magnesium and calcium compounds in the pipes. Call a professional plumbing service for new laundry drain installation to avoid unforeseen complications.
