Installing a Main Drain in Your House

When installing plumbing in a house, there are two important pipes you need to worry about; the water main and the sewer pipe or main drain. The water main supplies water to your house and the main drain takes wastewater and materials away from it. These pipes will need to be inspection by the water company when both installed or replaced. For this reason, you will need to contact a licensed plumber.

The Process

Installing a water main is a fairly easy process, but it requires a professional touch; you may want to contact the plumber for this one. Whether you do it yourself as you build a house or get it done professionally, you will need to have the pipe inspected to make sure it is up to standard codes.

Here are the steps for installation:

Step 1: Dig a trench outside the foundation of the house. This trench should be below the frost depth so the pipe won’t freeze in winter. It should also have a 2% gradient because the sewer pipe uses gravity to work.

Step 2: Lay a bed of sand for the pipe to lie on. There should not be any bumps or sags in the piping and the sand should be more or less level with the ground. Make sure the pipe lays flat on the sand.

Step 3: Install the required pipe. Usually it is made of PVC but it could also be made of clay, iron, or copper. Some regulations stipulate the size of pipe to be used. If you are using a metallic pipe, make sure you make allowances for expansion and contraction. Slide the pipes into each other and secure them. Make sure they fit properly. This part will need to be inspected by the water company.

Step 4: Testing will be done on the pipe before you cover it up. It will be tested with air and possibly water to make sure there are no leaks or breaks in the sewer line. After this has been done, you can move on to the final step.

Step 5: Your pipes have passed inspection and now can be covered up again. Cover the pipe first with a top layer of sand to complete the sand bed and then fill in the hole again.

The final step of course if making sure all the drains in your house are connected to this pipe. Getting this work done by a pro will give you peace of mind that you will not have problems with your main drain for years to come.
